Hawkinge parents drive pupils to school to avoid stepping in dog mess

Parents from The Churchill School Parent Forum are collecting signatures to urge the Council to provide pooch poop bins for dog walkers.

The school's newsletter reports that members of the forum feel one reason why parents drive to school is to avoid stepping in dog excrement.

Shepway Council have stated that litter bins can be used for dog waste.

And drivers face another hazard with parking space outside the school due to be cut with the introduction of zig-zag no parking lines scheduled for April.

April fool - You couldn't make it up ... could you ?

You couldn't make it up ... could you ?

I never heard so much utter rubbish spoken by an allegedly serious group of people.

Surely this is an April fool story.. please say it is... or is there something in the local water supply that continues to make Hawkinge parents the laughing stock of Shepway ?

Just another crazy excuse!

I agree with Fred!

I don't know what is worse - a parents forum actually raising this as a reason for driving to school or the fact that the school have printed it in the news letter.

I have a child at the school and I am embarrassed that this is being printed on a school news letter.

I would think that a forum such as this would have more important things to discuss!!

Does the school and this forum really believe that dog mess is a big factor in deciding whether to drive or walk to school!

Yes there is dog mess on the streets, but lets get this in perspective, we are not knee deep in it and it certainly doesn't deter people from walking to the pub for a drink or children from playing in the streets.

I have safely managed to negotiate the streets of Hawkinge without problem for a number of years now.

I understand that there are many reasons for driving children to school - parents who need to get to work, have multiple schools to drop off to, the weather, lack of time, laziness... but dog mess!!

Come-on just be honest rather than making lame excuses and looking foolish.

I am also a dog owner and I can say that extra dog bins will not make the slightest difference.

Those people who are ignorant enough not to clear up after their dogs will not suddenly start because of a few extra bins! In the same way that some people still litter the streets despite the provision of litter bins.

It's a dogs life - take your litter home with you

I have an answer to solve all the problems.

Parents should walk to school with their cotton wool shrouded children .. with their dogs. This solves the parking problems outside the school and traffic chaos caused by the school run itself and gives exercise to both parent and child... and dog.

On the way back home, parents can reflect on the serious issues affecting their little angels welfare including pollution, cost of fuel, taxes and how Council can cut back on costs .. on such items as emptying litter bins. Take your litter home with you being one obvious solution. A good lesson for their little angels to learn also.

There are of course additional hazards to be considered including the danger from seagulls, ants, wasps and bees, air pollution, radiation from Japan and skin cancer from the sun itself .. but you save worrying about getting a ticket from traffic wardens policing the no parking zig zag lines outside the school.

Better stay at home.. it's a dogs life out there.
